How do I use a Pencil (1st gen) with my iPad Air?

I got a 1st gen Pencil (as a gift) and never used it with my iPad Pro. (It was not something I wanted, but was given it anyway.) Before I bought it, I was told that I can use it with my new iPad Air. I figured out how I can connect them. How do I tell if the Pencil is charged?

It doesn't say that an iPad Air 4 uses the 1st gen. Maybe you read that the 1st gen is used with the iPad Air 3
