iMessage activation

I bought a new phone yesterday and am having a hard time activating my iMessage. When I send an iMessage it sends it through email not phone number. When I try to change it to phone number it says “an error occurred during activation.”

If you have a new phone number, have you changed the number on your Apple ID?
