Unless you are on macOS Mojave or later, Microsoft does not support the installation of Microsoft 365 or Office 2019 for Mac on earlier versions of the operating system, and the preceding are the only two 64-bit Office solutions that they currently support.

If you have upgraded to Catalina or Big Sur, then Office 2008/2011 for Mac and the early, 32-bit Office 2016 for Mac are disabled, and you will need to choose between the supported versions of Office in the first paragraph, or using the free 64-bit LibreOffice Suite which will open all of your existing Office documents.

You say that you can not update Microsoft Word. Please explains what that means. What specifically have you tried to do? Update from what version to what version? Why do you need to update? Have you recently upgraded your operating system and that caused this problem? Unfortunately, we are unable to read your mind to know what is going on, so it is up to you to explain with sufficient information for someone here to help you. Is this not logical?
