My son upgraded his Mac. What are the steps to set his old Mac Book Air with my husband's Apple ID so he can use it?

Good luck! You will need his Apple ID and password or have him follow the steps. And you do need to do it all or the device will still be tied to his Apple ID and will result in problems trying to upgrade, reinstall, or buy anything.
