Driver for printer

The HP LaserJet 1220 is not supported by HP, or Apple's AirPrint, but is among the supported devices within the Dec/2020 HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for Mac available here. After you download and install those drivers, you are not yet done.

With the LaserJet powered and connected, visit System Preferences > Printers & Scanners panel and right-click on your HP device entry. Select Reset printing system… and this will allow you to re-add your LJ 1220 using the newly installed HP LaserJet 1220 series driver. Once the device has been re-added with the correct driver, print something.

If you are thinking about a new printer, ensure that it appears on the Apple AirPrint list of supported printers. That gives you vendor independence.
