I have a new Mac Book Pro 16 inch computer. I am unable to set up touch ID after several attempts

Use Touch ID on Mac - Apple Support
Intel Macs only, does not apply to M1 SoC
Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
if no resolve
Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
