removing admin password and account on a desktop mac

Clarifying- - I bought a pre-owned desktop mac. It has an admin and password from the previous user, and I cant update or change settings. Tech specs are: High sierra- 10.13.6.

How do I remove the current admin info WITHOUT having password?

Will the machine be reset and everything on there be lost?

Thanks in advance.
