Software update

Can anyone help? My Mac does not give me the option to do a software update. The instructions say-Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates.

I do not have the option called Software Update. My Mac is only using Mac OS 10.13.6. Can anyone help?

Software Update didn't exist until Mojave 10.14.
