Roland Gaia and recording

Hi Guys,

Complete beginner here for using Logic Pro X looking for some help.

Set up is:

Focusrite Solo 3rd Gen

Roland Gaia Synth

Apple Mac

Logic Pro X

1 Guitar lead from interface to Roland Gaia

So the issue I’m having is getting all the sounds that Logic Pro has to offer. When I play my synth, all its sounds are there but I basically just want to use the Gaia as platform to use the other sounds in Logic (if that makes sense).

Should I pick midi or plug in instrument at the start? Does this make a difference?

the other issue I’m having is, it won’t pick up my synth when I hit record. It plays no problem when not recording.

apologies if this is a common post.

appreciate the help.

You need to connect the Gaia synth to the computer with a USB cable for MIDI and run an audio cable to to audio interface.

Now, you can create a track with a software instrument to use all Logic sounds. To record the Gaia, you create an Ext. MIDI track using the external instrument plug-in (there's a checkbox in the create track sheet). You need to select the correct MIDI port, that should be "Roland Gaia" and the correct MIDI channel, which you need to find out. I had an issue with a Roland FP-90, which sends on MIDI channel 1 but insists to receive on MIDI channel 4. You might see that with your Gaia as well. One common tar pit is forgetting the Local MIDI control. You need to switch off Local control to avoid MIDI loops or strange sounding signals.

That's all. If you need some more help, feel free to ask.

To make the MIDI over USB work, you need to switch off Local control in the Roland synth. This decouples the keyboard from the synth engine and avoids a MIDI loop. Here's a how to: https://rolandus.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201938059-Gaia-SH-01-Turning-Local-Switch-On-Off.

Actually, I would have expected, that the plug-in would show a pull down menu for the MIDI destination. Can you please check, that the Gaia synth show up as an Input ands is enabled in the Logic Preferences/Midi/Input?
