Self assigned IP address on iMac - Big Sur 11.1

Since upgrading to Big Sur 11.1 my iMac says the "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet" message. I can only connect via Wi-Fi.

Have been unable to resolve...power cycled router, Time Capsule etc.etc.

Any suggestions or solution please?

I had the same problem some time ago. Called my cable company and they told me that resetting the router would do the job and it did. Not a power down but a reset of the router.

Hope this will help a bit.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Sys Prefs>Network>highlight the Interface you're using>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: Using DHCP.

If using Wifi, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Again, thanks for the input but having tried three times am still getting Ethernet self assigned message......

Bizarrely the network settings page shows Ethernet Status = "Connected" while the "Ethernet has a self assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet" message is shown just underneath.....??

Left side panel shows...

WiFi connection - Green

Ethernet Connection - Yellow/Orange

Bluetooth PAN - Red (but I am not trying to make this connection)
