How can I recover songs that used to be in my itunes library so I can relod them on my ipod?

If these were purchases you can try Hide and unhide music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and books - Apple Support to see if they have been hidden. Otherwise you would need access to an old hard drive, device or backup that contained the items.
