I have a 2019 MacBook Pro running Big Sur. I have had to move some of my files to an external ssd and would like to include it in my Time Machine backups but Time machine will not let me select the ssd to remove it from excluded files in Options. Any help please?

It's still in ExFAT. I wanted to wait for advice before jumping into a reformat. Any thoughts on if its better to now reformat with APFS or stay with the old Mac OS extended (journaled)? Thanks!
That's why you can't use a Photos library on it. I'd go with APFS since it's a SSD.
