Hi wordprod,
We understand your computer is not recognizing your iPhone. We're happy to offer some guidance.
If your device is not showing up in Finder, you'll want to follow these steps: If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
You'll also want to make sure you have devices set to show in Finder. Open Finder then click on Finder up in the menu bar and choose Preferences. Go to the Sidebar tab, then under the Locations section, make sure you have the CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices option enabled.
If the device is able to show in Finder after these steps, you can then continue with the steps to back it up.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
We hope this helps. Take care!
In recent OS iterations, you now view the phone in the sidebar of the Finder. Plug your phone into your computer and unlock it, open a finder window to see it in the side bar. Click on it (select it) in the sidebar to see your options and controls:
