Read this if it won't turn on at all: If your Mac doesn't turn on - Apple Support.

Read this if it starts up to an icon: If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support.

Also, try these:

PRAM Reset: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support.
SMC Reset: How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support.
Safe Mode Startup: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support.
