Backup restore

I’m not tech savvy, can I just restore backup from ( iphone7 Aug 2017 ) onto an iPhone 6S plus? Or does it have to match such as iPhone 7 and iPhone 7restore Aug 2017 ?

The backup cannot be at a higher iOS version than the device that is being used for restore. That's it.
