Hi. How can I open an app direct to background?

Happens multiple times per day, I open Airmail (or any app), that I'm going to want to use in a few minutes. (Say, after new emails come in...) but I'm already doing something else, like chatting with my peeps. I want to open an app but NOT switch to it. Can this be done? TIA.

Mac mini 2018 or later

No. Any application that you launch becomes the foreground keyboard and mouse focused application. You will have to switch away from it using ⌘+tab to the application that you wish to use or delay launching your AirMail client until it is convenient for it to be frontmost.
