Wondering just how old you MacBook Pro is.

You might be able to update from Sierra.


Identify your MacBook Pro model (from early 2008 on up)

https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201300


On that link / page above: you can see listed the newest operating system (OS) that can be installed on your MacBook Pro


You can see the steps to take to update to the newest suitable OS in the page that opens from the link below
