Use of same external HD previously used for TM backups to keep New Mac backups

I have a 1.5 TB external HD that I use for Time Machine backup of my current MacBook Pro. I am buying a new M1 MB Pro (same HD size). Can I still use the same 1.5 TB disk to backup my new Mac? I am not planning any more backups of my old Mac (OS Mojave).

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14
