Macbook Pro 2019 16" terrible performance

I'm having terrible performance issues: programms crashing when not doing anything heavy, overheating, loud fans.... Too many issues for too much money!

Hi mimixdl,

Welcome to the Apple community where we do our best to help each other.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing troublesome issues.

Apple provides a lot of support articles online that can help troubleshoot.

You can find out about fans and fan noise, and follow the steps to make changes if need be:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202179

Wondering what the underlying cause of the various effects might be.

Perhaps you might like to check whether it is a memory or storage issue ?

Eg: You may have stored a lot of images, songs, or movies etc. that could be backed up on to a portable hard-drive.

How to check, and /or free up storage space on your Mac.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206996

Activity monitor on your Mac is a handy way to see which apps are using all the energy:

https://support.apple.com/https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT202731

If all seems ok there:

If you wish, you can run Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac for hardware issues:

https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT202731

Hope there is something here to help, so you can start enjoying your Mac again.

Apple also has a "Get support" link on the right, at the top of this page.

Feel free to post again, (and share anything you've tried) if you need other help.

(You might want to let us know which Operating System you are using.)

All the best

yep - i've done ALL of the above, including contacting support. What support said was that this is how the machine was designed, in order to keep cool. However, every time I try to edit video, use CHrome, or Safari bookmarks, or connect to external monitor, the machine gets really hot, the fans kick in, and "kernel" processes start using high percent of CPU, then i get the spinning beach ball forever, causing me to force quit whatever I am doing. and FYI - these problems were present under Catalina, and when I updated to Big Sur, things got worse...

I will probably have to take it in for servicing, but I wish I could return this, TBH, and get the 13" with the M1 processor instead, or use the almost $4,000 spent on this machine towards a desktop.

Thank you for your reply, mimixdl,

Sorry you aren't enjoying your MacBook Pro right now.

It seems that some third-party (non-Apple) software may cause trouble(s) if installed on a Mac.

Eg: Some Mac users have reported that Chrome, installed on a Mac, really hogs all the energy needed for other tasks.

Have no experience of this myself, having steered clear of Chrome, but it does seem that non-Apple software may be the cause of your issues.

When such software is uninstalled, it can still leave troublesome files behind.

Downloading and running the free "Etrecheck" software, can reveal such troublesome files:
