What does that mean "update my photo files"...?


If you launch the Photo.App you should have access to your Photo Library.


If you do not see your preferred default photo library hold the Option key when you launch Photos:





Photos User Guide for Mac - Apple Support


If you're missing photos or videos in the Photos app





The old iPhoto.app was deprecated in 2015, replaced with Apple's "Photos application."
