Objects, including Tables, have two main settings controlling their behaviour—Move with text, and Stay on Page.

By default, any Object (including a Table) is automatically set to fill the width of the page, and to Move with text.

The tale can be selected by clicking on it, and, when selected, can be moved to another location in the text by dragging the 'bullseye' at the top lef corner of the table up or down, then dropping it into the new location. Accuracy of the drop may require more than one attempt, as there seems to be a bit on randomness n where the dropped object lands.

Changing the setting in the Arrange panel of the Format nspector to Stay on page, and the Wrap setting from Inline with text to Above and Below, or Around makes the move more predictable, and alllows you to easily change the width of the table.

Set to Stay on Page, the Table will, if not moved by the user, keep its position on the page. When text is added above the table, it will push existing text below it further down the page, Depending on the wrap setting, the text will jump, word by word, from Above the table to Below the table, or will flow past ton one or bothh sides of the table and into the space below the table.
