Well, there are two options.

1) Don't use Photos.

2) Export all of your photos to somewhere else.

Then, disable "copy items to the Photos Library."

Add the photos back into Photos--the files won't be moved from the location you put them.

Those photos will not be available in iCloud Photos, if you use it.

Do you have a photoslibrary package?

There is no "masters" folder in the current photoslibrary package. They should be in "originals."

That's the package. Ctrl-click on it an choose Show Package Contents.

No.

You can search for photos within Photos. You can drag the photos from Photos to use in most apps.

You can even drag them into an Open File dialog, like one to upload them here.
