My safari keeps searching with Yahoo, and I keep getting an error message that my (brand new) laptop is low on memory

My M1 MacBook Air keeps searching through the yahoo search engine when I am on Safari. I've come to the conclusion that I have somehow downloaded some malware. I have tried to find a solution for a long time now, and nothing is working.

This is what I've tried:

1. Making sure that my search engine is set to google and not yahoo under safari preferences.
2. Disabling all safari extensions (of which I didn't have any)
3. Reseting my safari by clearing all caches and data
4. Looking for suspicious apps on my laptop. I found something that was called "Cannon Utilities" - I had never downloaded anything like this, and when I deleted it, my browser temporarily changed back to searching through google! Unfortunately, the next day it was back to yahoo.
5. I have tried downloading some malware de-install software, but all the sites I have been to seem really sketchy and I don't think I feel comfortable downloading anything else.

If anyone has any suggestions, please, please, please leave them before!
