MacBook won’t start up

I am preparing my MacBook Pro to sell it secondhand. I have erased the hard drive. But when I turn on the MacBook and try to reinstall the operating system I Initially get a white screen with the Apple logo and the loading bar, but it never fully loads and then I get a grey circle with a line through it. what should I do?

thx.

Thank you for the reply, but I am still having a problem.

I entered disc utility and repaired the drive (no errors were found). Then I tried to reinstall the operating system. It tries to instal high Sierra because the machine is quite old. But I get an error message saying. that it was not possible to create a start up for the installation of APFS.

Do you have any idea what the problem could be now?

Many thanks
