Missing contacts

I recently discovered that I was missing many of my contacts. I’d appreciate any info on why & more importantly how to correct?

iPhone SE, iOS 14

Enable Contacts in iCloud:

Go to: Settings
Tap: your Apple ID (top item)
Tap: iCloud
Tap: Contacts, making it green.
