Finder no longer working on Big Sur

Hi there,

Out of the blue last night my apps started spinning, most of the apps were spinning. I tried to reboot and it shut down all apps but then would not power off it was stuck at the desktop picture. I did a hard reboot. On reboot :

  1. Finder was non responsive - Force Quit Applications had the Finder as not responding
  2. Mail index was busted and it instructed to quit mail and restart so it can index again.

I did that and Mail was fixed. But Finder no matter what I do will not be responsive. I even went ahead to recovery mode and reinstalled Big Sur with the same results. Finder still is non responsive with the same Not Responding in Force Quit Application. I also tried removing the plist file for Finder preferences and still no luck.

Is there anything I can apart from wiping clean my drive and starting from scratch? Thanks!

Hi radwar,

If it is possible, you could try testing in a new user account. Go to System Preferences --> Users & Groups --> unlock with the "padlock" --> "+" --> make a new Test Admin account.

Cheers,

Jack
