To see the empty drive, go to Apple > About This Mac > System Report > select USB in the Hardware section.
To see an inserted DVD or CD in the drive on your desktop, go to Finder > Finder Preferences > General and make sure that CDs, DVDs and iPods is checked.
To control what a CD or DVD does when you insert it into the drive, go to Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
