Can my external G drive be causing my IMac to perform poorly. I get the beach ball turning incessantly and many glitches. My IMac runs very slow.

Disconnect the G drive. Do the problems go away?
If they do, you should consider replacing it.
You can also run Disk Utility First Aid on the G drive to see if that helps.
