Does a Late 2009 iMac 21.5" have a Recovery Mode on the hard disk? All the online info shows a procedure to restart with Command + R to enter Recovery Mode. When I so this, computer starts as usual.

If it was upgraded to at least OS X Lion, it should. If not, you can make a bootable installer: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support for macOS. Your Mac supports up to High Sierra.
