iCloud storage is billed monthly until you cancel it. It is similar to renting physical storage space or renting an apartment; you pay monthly for as long as you want to use the space.

Cancel upgraded iCloud storage by downgrading to the free 5GB plan. See instructions in: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207594
