google taking over safari

google has taken over my safari how can i fix it?

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 11.2

Safari is a Browser.

Google is a Search engine.


To set Safari as the default browser:

Make sure there is no Proxies enabled inadvertently.


1. Restart the router.


2. Deselect Proxies, if selected.

   System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab

   Unlock the lock if you have to.

   Under "Select  a protocol…”, uncheck any box if check-marked.

   Click "OK” then  "Apply”.

Clear all website data and test.

Startup in Safe Mode:    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Login to your account.

Launch Safari and test.

 To exit Safe Mode, click  in the menu bar and choose “Restart”.

 Launch Safari holding  the shift key down and test.


Etrecheck report would have helped.

      Download EtreCheck, run it to see if there is any adware installed or not.

      Click  “Free download” button,

      Open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

      “Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

      Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy report” .

      Paste the report when you reply.


      Note: This is a diagnostic test.
