How do I overcome this issue with not being able to open my Apple iWatch ?

When the watch is on the original charger the screen is blank except for the blinking logo. Nothing else shows. The watch has been on the charger for hours with no change. I tried holding down the stem and button for more that 10-15 seconds with no change.
the one thing I would add is that the watch was not used for a number of months.
The charger works fine for another Apple iWatch that we have.
All I see when charging is the Apple logo flashing intermittently.
Tap on the blue text.
If the battery has been dead for months you may need a new one if it has gone into negative discharge mode.
New battery or new phone ?
