How do I get my phone to update the ios? Settings says the software is current.

No. The SE is an iPhone 6s in a smaller case, not an iPhone 6.

The first generation SE actually has the same internals as the iPhone 6S (also compatible with iOS 13 and 14).
The message is correct. The iPhone 6 does not have the required hardware for iOS 13 or 14.
An iPhone 6 cannot update past iOS 12.
Your 6½ year old iPhone is too old to use an iOS version greater than 12.x.

The iPhone SE was released by Apple in March, 2016. The iPhone 6 was released by Apple in September, 2014.
