How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT201475

For the document 'macOS Big Sur is compatible with these computers' click here --> https://support.apple.com/HT211238

"To upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion, first upgrade to OS X El Capitan, then upgrade to macOS Big Sur."

So it looks like you don't need any intermediate upgrade to go from Yosemite.

Do make sure you have a backup.

Do make sure you realize what may happen to old apps not supported on Big Sur. 32-bit app compatibility with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later - Apple Support Check if your old apps will still work with with the OS you want to install - https://roaringapps.com/apps This is particularly critical if you are upgrading to Catalina or newer, as older 32 bit apps will no longer work. To check for those, try this 32 bit application scanner application --> https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/
