Do you need to use 2 different carriers, or can you use one carrier and 2 numbers?

No iPhones have 2 eSims. There is one sim and one eSim (or 2 sims in the Chinese models). You can use one carrier with 2 numbers (the only option if your phone is locked), or 2 different carriers (unlocked models only).

Actually, while there is only 1 eSim, you can use multiple carriers and numbers with the single eSim,. just not more than one. can be active at a time. The eSim can hold configuration profiles for multiple numbers. But only one can be activated at any one time.

If your iPhone is unlocked, then you can use numbers from different carriers. Otherwise, both the physical sim and the eSim must be using numbers from the same carrier.
