when the power disconnects, the MAC book pro in close clam shell mode sleeps immediately. is there a way to prevent this when an external monitor is connected.

thats sad.. :( In India there are frequent power cuts and laptop going into sleep mode immediately disrupts the work flow and also cuts off the connections like ssh . hope they fix this.
Doesn’t laptop already have a battery ??

I'm sorry but what has that got to do with Apple? Closed display mode requires power. Get a generator if you need power when the power goes off.

Closed display mode is a VERY special case that only exists while you meet ALL the requirements, including power adapter connected.
Of course the laptop has a battery. But your issue is related to using the computer in closed display mode which has specific power requirements. It requires external power.
