What do you want to update? Please remember the computer is almost 13 years old and has been considered obsolete for many years. It cannot run current versions of Mac OS, I think the last version of Mac OS an early 2009 iMac can run is 10.11 or maybe 10.12. Ram can go to about 6-8 GB. Frankly if it were me, I'd put my money and other resources towards replacing the old girl.
