Private browsing

Somehow, I don't know how, I seem to have gotten into a mode on my iPad using Safari that is called Private Browsing and this window by that name will NOT go away. I don't want private browsing and I did not intentionally open this window. How do I get rid of the window and how to I avoid getting one again? Thanks for any help.
