Can't boot into macOS recovery mode

I'm unable to boot into macOS recovery mode to reinstall macOS on my Intel based iMac. Using an Apple wireless keyboard and holding CMD-R while starting just ends up with a flashing file folder with a "?". Any ideas how to get this to work? Do I need a USB connected keyboard?

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Please use a USB keyboard, any will work just fine. If you use a Windows keyboard the Control key is the same as the Command key on a Mac keyboard. So use Control + R when starting up when using a MS Windows keyboard.
