With most things i want to do my macs software is not up to date, i try to click apple symbol then system preferences but i have no option to even see if im up to date or not

The model year of a MacBook Air is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.
A late-2010 through mid-2011 MacBook Air can be upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.6 but no later version.

i have an early 2015 mac bookair my software now is on OS X Yosemite, as i click software update below that it says there is none
Because there are no Yosemite updates beyond 10.10.5.
You're confusing updates with upgrades. If you want to upgrade your macOS to a higher version, you do it with the App Store app.
