when I try to send a message, I get an error message saying the message was not delivered. How do I troubleshoot this?
MacBook Pro (2020 and later)
If you are attempting to send to a non-Apple recipient, your message (regardless of what device it originated on) must literally pass through your iPhone [which must be powered on and in range of cell service] to be transferred from Apple messaging to SMS text messaging.
You also need to change a setting in your iPhone:
Settings > Messages > Text Message forwarding ...
... to allow your specific source device to forward messages through your iPhone.
(and of course, all must be using the SAME Apple-ID)

I don't know what a "standard message" is. There are many MacBook Pro models and years running many different operating system versions.
