Migrating from old MacBook Pro to new

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to migrate the files from my old 2012 MacBook Pro. Wireless transfer is not an option, as I’m on a satellite-based internet service with a data cap and transfer would take forever. How do I physically connect my old Pro to the new one? I already ordered a USB-C to USB adapter so that I can use existing peripherals; will that work for migration also? Or do I need another adapter that didn’t come with the new machine (grrrr)?

Yes USBC to USB for peripheral back ups

The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot of a brand new machine— you have one shot here. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205749

If that opportunity has past, the second best way is use the Migration Assistant.

I'm not asking about how to backup. I'm asking about how to migrate non-wirelessly from old Macbook Pro to new one. I don't think you are correct about the distinction between Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The latter is what loaded on initial bootup of the new machine and I haven't progressed beyond the first step because I don't yet know how to connect, i.e. from a Mac or a Time Machine backup (and which cable I need for either of those). Can I use a USB-C to USB adapter to connect the two machines and migrate everything?

Hello,

I've just received my new MacBook Pro 13", and want to migrate date via cable from my MacBook Pro Retina 2015. I understand that I may be dense here, but don't I need a male-to-male cable? The USB-C to USB Adapter is female-to-male--I see where it would attach to the new computer, but not how the old computer connects to the adapter.

Thanks for clarifying this for me!
