Is there a way to upgrade MacOS without using the app store?

I am trying to do a hard update to my iMac 21.5 (late 2013) and bring it up to Catalina from Yosemite. When I try to download it from the app store it asks for apple ID authentication and expects a 6-digit passcode but there is nowhere to enter it. Any advice? Is there a way to upgrade macOS without going through the app store?

Put the code just after the password. For example, if your password is abc and the code 123456, put abc123456 in the password field.
