Is an external storage device (my Passport) ok as a Time Machine?

Will a backup device, 'My Passport' be okay to use rather than the 'Time Machine'?

Does the Time Machine do filing, system, etc. when backing up?

Do I just buy the Time Machine?

Time Machine is part of the operating system and governs the backup process. You'll need an external drive to accept the backup file. Your external drive should be larger than the size of your system to capture incremental backups and allow for additional files.
