TimeMachine problem. I need help.

Setting up recently purchased 2019 iMac with external USB3 Samsung SSD recognized by Disk Utility and Finder that Time Machine does not recognize as an option. I'm running Big Sur. The Samsung was set-up in Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended Journaled format. Any suggestions about how to make this work? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

Follow these steps. This will erase all data on the external drive:

Go to Disk Utility (Finder > Go > Utilities)
In Disk Utility, select “View” > “Show All Devices”.
Select the top and non-indented drive in the external section of Disk Utility that matches the name of your external drive.
Click Erase
Name: any name you want
Format: Use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if you are using macOS Catalina or earlier, or APFS if you are using macOS Big Sur.
Scheme: GUID Partition Map
Click Erase

Finally, setup Time Machine: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.
