Apple Watch Pairing ask for Iphone Software Update (already updated) - Pairing fails

How can I get around the following. This has happened on 2 Iphones - Iphone 11 and Iphone SE

Both are updated to latest software.


When attempting to pair an apple watch that used to be paired with another iphone I get to the point where is wants to update the software on the watch and I receive the following on the iphone:


To update the software on your Apple Watch,

first you need to update the software on your Iphone


It then gives you no option other than to reset the Iphone and the cycle begins again.

From a web browser,sign in to iCloud.com with your Apple ID.

Go to Find iPhone.

Click All Devices at the top of the screen.

Click your Apple Watch.

Click Erase [device]. Select Next until the device is erased.

Click Remove from Account.
