Touch Bar Malfunction

I am having trouble with my touch bar. It shows Desktop and browser name on the right side. When I touch the ' < ' to expand the full functions, it opens for a split second and disappears. Then all I am left with are the Desktop and Browser buttons on the right side of touch bar, which I am not able to remove.

I have updated my machine, restarted it, and customized the touch bar. Nothing has helped so far. Any other suggestions?

You have customized changes.. try change back to defaults as a test.

for the Control bar (control strip) disappearing when you expand—

Try resetting the  SMC  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

and

Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

(get at least two-three rounds of the chimes when holding the NRAM Reset)
