The best antivirus, cleaning app, and overall maintenance app for Mac OS is Mac OS itself. All you need to do with Mac OS to keep it secure and running well is to keep it up-to-date and do periodic (about 1x per week) restarts. Other than that, leave it alone. Adding third party antivirus, cleaning, security and other types of maintenance apps to Mac OS adds no additional level of security. The only thing these apps do is have the opposite affect users want. They make Mac OS slow, unstable, generate odd behavior and make Mac OS appear buggy.

Malwarebytes is excellent for finding other malware and adware. As there are ZERO viruses for Mac OS that is why you do not need an Antivirus app, however there is other malware. That malware must be installed by the end user but some can be sneaky to the unsophisticated and Malwarebytes will catch those.

"Is there software available to check for viruses?: We got a pop up saying a dangerous virus was going to take over the machine. We called Apple Support. At the end of the call they mentioned a site that is used for checking a mac for viruses, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe malwarebytes. The said they would send an email with information but I didn't get it."

Scan your Mac for Malware:

They would have mentored Malwarebytes. Use MalwareBytes for Mac --- This is software that searches for malware/adware. So, scan with it and then remove what is found. Once removed, uninstall MalwareBytes for Mac. Then restart the Mac.
