Should I do something to prepare time machine? Last time I got message that time machine had been created on the earlier OS and could not be opened!

How do I convince time machine to open the external hard drive backup? Last time the pop-up said that time machine had been prepared with n earlier OS than the one just installed effectively deleting that back-up!
