My old Mac is from 2011. I just got a new Mac. I have my Time Machine backup, but I don’t want to install the old operating system on my new Mac. How do I restore all my files and settings WITHOUT restoring the old OS?

You really should start your own thread when asking for help as there may be others who will search for a solution to the same problem you are facing and they will never find an answer buried in this thread. Not sure you are really asking a question here. If you are thinking of getting rid of the old computer and are asking how to clear it of your data, see Apples recommendations at this link. You will want to also log into your Apple ID account and remove the old computer from your list of "Devices".

Gwenfromcarmichael,

You cannot move Word 2011 to a new Mac, you will need to upgrade to Word for Mac 2016, 2019 or 2021 or Office 365. Your version of Word is simply too old to run on current versions of Mac OS. Only 64 bit applications will work on Mac OS Big Sur and later versions. I would recommend that you inventory your MBP's third party apps that you want to migrate and ensure they are either upgraded to 64 bit or replaced with apps that are 64 bit. You can using Roaringapps to help you determine.

Finally, after you have updated the old MBP please use Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant to migrate. This will require a Time Machine backup of the old computer, if you do not have one, please make one ASAP. You can learn how in Back up your Mac with Time Machine and you will need a high quality EHD such as a OWC Mercury Elite Pro which you can use with the new Mac to backup.

Hey, I think we are neighbors too. I live in Folsom, CA.

When you turn on the new iMac -- the migration assistant will pop up. Make sure your TimeMachine be connected to the new iMac.

By following the prompts, you will be transfer all the files, setting to the new iMac. It will not transfer the old OS to the new iMac.

You also want to make sure 32 bit applications will not work after Catalina and after.

Few of the applications might need to be re-downloaded, re-activated ...etc.

Are you asking does Apple sell the new macOS updates on DVDs, the answer is no. They also do not make or sell their own brand of DVD drives. You really should start your own thread when asking for help as there may be others who will search for a solution to the same problem you are facing and they will never find an answer buried in this thread.

Buck55eye, You mention that you do not have an external drive. Where does your Time Machine backup reside? Is it on your internal drive on the Mac? If yes, that is very risky as the whole reason for having a Time Machine backup is to save your data like in the case of a catastrophic failure, like a hard drive failure on your Mac. If that happens, you have lost everything. External drives are quite inexpensive these days. What is generally recommended in this forum is an OWC Mercury Elite like in this link or equivalent. Personally I use a Seagate 4 TB drive I purchased at an Apple store a few years ago for ~ $150 (cheaper today, I'm sure). A drive with it's own power supply is best. I also have an inexpensive Western Digital USB buss powered HD for a disk clone that I keep off-site.
